The traditional nativity scene of the Coimbra Firefighters was inaugurated on 15 December at 3:00 pm, at the corps’ headquarters on Avenida Mendes Silva. Admission is free, and visits are open until 6 January (Epiphany), daily from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, with an exceptional closing time of 6:00 pm on 24 December.
With over 90 years of history, this nativity scene is one of the city’s most emblematic traditions. It stands out for its dynamic character, featuring handcrafted mechanical devices, many created by firefighters from previous generations and powered by a central motor.
The display includes around 150 figures, including animals, spread over an area of approximately 60 m², as well as an exhibition of firefighting equipment. Outdoors, visitors can also see a stable with animals and an illuminated Christmas tree.
The construction of the nativity scene involves all the firefighting units, reflecting a strong sense of teamwork and the festive spirit of the season. Inauguration, a firefighter will explain how the mechanisms work, bringing this unique creation to life.
An excellent Christmas visit for students and the academic community of Coimbra.
