22/02/2024 – Visiting Portugal, from the ‘inside’.

It's undeniable that Portugal is a country of incredible beauty, and it's certainly true to say that 'Portugal is beautiful, outside, and inside’!

To visit Portugal is to touch the sky at the top of the highest mountains, but also to uncover the most beautiful mysteries of an underground world, built by nature over thousands of years.

The reason for this, is the many caves that can be visited in Portugal. Under our feet, there are sometimes undiscovered 'worlds' and glimpses of unbelievable places that seem straight out of a film.

Most of these caves are concentrated in the Azores and the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros, but there are other options to discover all over the country, with their different characteristics and points of interest. They are the perfect place to learn more about the history of the land, whether with friends or family.

Portuguese caves can be divided into 3 types: limestone, volcanic or the result of human action (mines and shelters, for example). Each one has its own beauty and visiting them is a unique experience.

These are places that have been adapted to make travelling easier for everyone, giving you the chance to see Portugal's 'inner' beauty.

So that you can start planning your visits, we've put together a list of the caves you can safely visit in Portugal.
