07/03/2024 - Celebrating women and protecting their rights. International Women's Day is celebrated every year on 8th March, a date that commemorates the achievements of women who, throughout history, have fought for their rights and against prejudice.
There are several explanations as to why International Women's Day is on 8th March.
In 1910, the creation of a women's day was proposed by Clara Zetkin, a German feminist, during the Second International Conference of Socialist Women.
So, 8th March was chosen because on that day in 1917, Russian women protested demanding better living conditions.
The demonstration brought together more than 90,000 women workers and became known as "Bread and Peace".
This was a strong and active group of women, who wore the colours purple, green and white, which are now associated with International Women's Day.
In the 1970s, in 1975, the UN officially recognised and established this date as International Women's Day.
The campaign theme, for International Women's Day 2024 is: Inspire Inclusion.
When we inspire others to understand and value the inclusion of women, we create a better world. And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there is a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.
