12.5.2022- In the last six academic years, the total number of university students has increased by 20% in Portuguese universities and mainly in polytechnics and private schools. 

In the last six academic years, the total number of university students has increased by 20%. The growth in the number of students is more significant in polytechnics and private education. In the polytechnic sector, there was an increase of 28%. 

The private sector is the one that has grown the most since 2015/2016, with a 41% increase in the number of students enrolled. The private ones started to teach 19% of the students. 

The data provided by the educational institutions also reveal that, in this academic year, about 4500 students enrolled in public universities and polytechnics have the International Student Statute. This is a remarkable percentage increase, which makes this year the second year with more international students in higher education. 

The main countries of origin of international students are Brazil and the Portuguese-speaking African Countries.
